Here's a question I ask in the first day of my college advertising class.

"What is Google?"

Every time, I get the same answer.

"Google is a search engine," my students tell me.

"You're only half right," I say. "Google is also one of the world's biggest advertising agencies."

I then proceed to tell them the story of a CNN anchor who actually said on the air one day, "I don't understand why Google's stock price is so high. They're just a free search engine. How do they make money?"

I guess he never noticed all the ads on the right side of Google's result pages. Nor the Google ads that are plastered all over millions of web sites (including this one). There are even some websites that contain nothing but Google ads (Google hates this, but even they can't visit every site on the web to see who's doing it).
