The vendor does not pay anything to the website owner until someone who came from that website buys something.

Email Advertising

Many online marketers mail ads to a subscriber list on a regular basis. It's easy, inexpensive and effective.

The subscribers are generally people who have visited their website and signed up for a newsletter or some other offer.

This is NOT SPAM. It's called "Opt-in." Most ethical website owners now use a "double opt-in" technique to protect themselves against spam accusations. Example: www.publicityhound.com and www.antion.com

There are a number of services that will send out or "broadcast" an email to a list. Two of the most common are

Banner Advertising

These small graphic or video advertisements that are generally square or rectangular in shape. They appear on many different kinds of webpages and websites, but they all share the same purpose: when a visitor clicks on one, the visitor is taken to the landing page of an advertiser's website.

Banner ads are often sold and packaged through advertising clearinghouses or networks like ValueClick and Google Adwords.

A webmaster would simply place some HTML code, generated automatically by the network, in the space where ad will appear.

If you're an advertiser, you buy banner ads. If you're a webmaster, you place them on your website and use them to generate revenue.
